Anita had never been particularly fond of school and had never fancied herself the type to work. All she wanted was a husband who would love and cherish her (and if he was rich that wouldn’t hurt either).
Her brother reminded her that if she had a child before he did, that child would be heir to the family fortune.
She turned to a local matchmaker for help in finding a husband.
The matchmaker set her up with a man called Amar.
He was very attractive and had good prospects but…
He found her sense of humor distasteful and he didn’t think it was proper for her to indicate her interest in him. He outright rejected her when she attempted to take his hand. She never spoke to him again.
A few weeks later she was checking the post when a handsome young soldier happened passed. He introduced himself as Ricky.
His infantry was stationed nearby and he didn’t know anyone in Gwychenville. Anita did the only proper thing and invited him to dinner. After the meal the two went for a walk in the garden. They spoke long into the night.
Anita was pretty sure she’d found her soulmate.
It was almost time for the twins to come of age. Orlando thought he should throw a ball for them and present them to society. He invited everyone he knew and all their friends. Anita didn’t want to be presented to young suitors though, she already knew who she wanted.
Ricky promised that he would come to the ball and he would ask Orlando for permission to take her hand in marriage.
The night of the ball came and Anita was actually quite excited.
It was a great party
Except that Ricky never showed.
Anita sent letters for him, but they were returned undelivered. She heard that his infantry had been ordered to move out and she had to believe that it had left before the ball. The only reason he wouldn’t have contacted her is that he… was dead.
Simon was completely unaware of his sister’s heartbreak at the ball. He was introduced to the daughter of the dock master that Orlando had worked for before he’d gone into the service of the duke.
Her name was Marissa, and unlike all the other women Simon had known, Marissa was accomplished. Since her father had no sons, she had helped him run the docks since a young age and now held a senior position on his staff. Simon was enchanted.
